Odds are that 2 to 4 of every ten of your friends are or have been a victim of cyber stalking.
The fact is, it may even be you that has been cyber stalked. Cyber stalking is receiving unwanted frightening or obscene emails, texts, or messages; being harassed or threatened on Social Media and/or being followed by someone using technology to track your location.
This infographic will help identify if you or your friends are a victim of cyber stalking; and if so, what immediate action to take, who to report the crime to, and where to get additional support if needed.
What This Means For You
Cyber stalking is on the rise. According to a study published in the Journal for Interpersonal Violence by R. Tokunaga and K. Aune, it is estimated between 20% and 40% of online users are victims of cyber stalking.
If you are a victim of cyber stalking take these immediate actions:
- Respond to the person, with a simple statement to stop contacting you, do not use threats
- Document the abuse
- Block the person from profiles and texts
Then report the crime to:
- Report to the social media platform
- Report to local authorities
- File an FBI IC3.gov complaint
